Entertainment Exec: New NBA Media Deals An Example Of 'Transfer Of Wealth From Hollywood To Sports Leagues'
Jul 31, 2024 2:46 PM
Hollywood agents and writers have begun complaining that the NBA's 11-year, $76 billion deals with Disney, NBC and Amazon will impact their businesses as there will be fewer new scripted television shows and fewer reruns, which will result in lower residuals.
NBC’s deal alone will replace more than 150 hours of broadcast TV entertainment with live NBA programming on Sunday and Tuesday nights, which excludes the playoffs.
One veteran media executive who wished to not be named in the Hollywood Reporter story described the deals as a “transfer of wealth from Hollywood to the sports leagues.”
Disney said that it expects to spend $25billion on content this year, down from $27billion in 2023. Fortypercent of its content budget is dedicated to sports and sports-adjacent programming.
“There’s less money overall, and more of that money is being allocated toward sports,” says Jonathan Miller, a former NBA executive who serves as CEO of Integrated Media, which specializes in digital media investments. “The sports audience is a more or less a guaranteed audience: predictable, you can sell against it, you kind of know where it’s going to fall within ranges.”

Kevin Durant, Anthony Edwards Bonding On Team USA
Jul 31, 2024 9:08 AM
The purpose for Team USA is to win Olympic Gold. A secondary outcome from whenever players get together to play for the United States is planting the seeds for future partnerships. Countless NBA duos and trios have been formed out of players having fun as teammates for Team USA and seeking to carry that back to their day jobs.
This summer, an inseparable duo has been Kevin Durant of the Phoenix Suns and Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves. ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported that Edwards has been following Durant around like a big brother while in France. ESPN's Tim Bontemps shared that it was the same in Olympics training camp in Las Vegas early in July.
There are no indications that any sort of NBA team-up is in the future for the Wolves star and the Suns star. Both players are on multi-year contracts, and both Minnesota and Phoenix are second-apron teams who are restricted in what moves they can make. There's also a nearly 13-year age gap between the All-Stars.
Edwards has been outspoken of his admiration for Durant. The two were famously spotted talking trash to each other as the Timberwolves dispatched the Suns during the first round of the 2024 NBA Playoffs.
