Work on Nuremberg’s underground began in March 1967. The first section of the U1 line – with a length of four kilometres – was opened in March 1972. The first section of the U2 line was opened in the month of January 1984. Over the years, the city’s metro system has undergone numerous expansions and now stretches over thirty-five kilometres, with forty-six stations along the way. In many parts of the city, old tram lines have been removed to make way for the more comfortable and faster metro. It is still possible to get a glimpse of these tram lines, as all but the tracks have been removed. Today’s underground in Nuremberg will take you to any part of the city you want, be it the exhibition centre, the airport or the suburb of Furth.
The city of Nuremberg was the first German city to introduce driverless train technology on the underground. It later became the first city in the world to offer both automatic and manual services on the same line. Plans for the project were drawn up in 1997, but development did not begin until two years later. In June 2008, the country’s first automatic service opened, currently operating on the U2 and U3 lines.

Nuremberg U-BahnLines
The metro system consists of three lines, U1, U2 and U3, serving a total of 46 stations.
- The U1 has a track length of about 18.5 km and serves 27 stations. It runs between Messe and Eberhardshof.
- The U2 line is slightly shorter, with a length of 13.1 km and stops at 16 stations. It runs between Röthenbach and the airport.
- The U3 is 7 km long and serves a total of 11 stations. It runs between Gustav-Adolf-Straße and Friedrich-Ebert-Platz stations.
Nuremberg U-Bahn Hours
The metro service starts at 5:00 am and runs until 12:00 am. The interval between trains is 3-7 minutes at peak times, while the rest of the day trains arrive every 10 minutes.

Park and ride facilities are available for the passengers at most of the stations. Over 1000+ parking spaces are available. Those who have valid tickets, can use the service for free for up to 48 hours.

Nuremberg U-Bahn Tickets , Pass and Fares
The Nuremberg subway has several types of tickets for all passengers. Occasional travellers can buy a single ticket for a single journey. This ticket is valid for 90 minutes in one direction and allows for transfers. For very short journeys, passengers can buy a short distance single ticket, which is valid for 60 minutes and also allows transfers. A short distance ticket costs €1.60 for an adult and €0.80 for children aged 6-14 and for bicycles. A regular single ticket for adults costs €3.00 and €1.50 for children and bicycles.
Frequent travellers can pay for their journey with a MobiCard. A 7-day MobiCard is valid for one person and can be used for unlimited travel for 7 days. This card costs €24.10 and is valid from 9am on weekdays and full-time on weekends and public holidays. A MobiCard 31 Days is valid for one person and allows unlimited travel for 31 days. It can be used from 9am on weekdays and full time on weekends and public holidays. It can be purchased for €82.30. The AMobiCard 9’0 clock is valid for 31 days and can only be used on weekends and public holidays. The card costs €66.40. MobiCard months, MobiCard 6 months and MobiCard 1 year are also available. The fare is calculated on a monthly basis. The 3-month card costs €68.60 per month. The 6 month and 1 year cards are comparatively cheaper at €63.90/month and €56.90/€62.30/month respectively.
Special rates are available for students and apprentices. To purchase these tickets, you must be eligible, which is determined based on certain criteria. Students in grades 5-10 pay just €25.00 and those in grades 11-13 pay €35.00 for their student ticket.
Tickets are also available for people travelling in groups. The ticket offers a 50% saving on individual tickets. The group should consist of at least 10 people. These tickets can only be purchased at Service Centres. Another option is the Hotel Ticket, which can be used by people staying in a hotel. It is valid for one person and can be used for unlimited travel on two consecutive days. A combi-ticket allows free travel to concerts, theatre performances, sporting events, etc.
Nuremberg U-Bahn Rules and Tips
Any items left on the trains can be collected from the Lost and Found office. It is located at Siebenkeesstraße 6. The office can also be contacted on 09 11 / 81 00 97 70. All stations and trains are equipped with CCTV cameras for passenger safety. Park and Ride facilities are also available at various stations. Parking is free for 48 hours and a valid ticket is required to park at these facilities. Nuremberg has over a thousand parking spaces in around eleven Park and Ride facilities.
Nuremberg U-Bahn Safety and Services
One of the aims of the Nuremberg underground is to provide accessibility for all passengers. In the unlikely event of a person or object falling onto the tracks, an automatic emergency stop is triggered and the trains are also equipped with emergency brakes. For those who like to work on the move, there is no need to worry. Wi-Fi service is available in all vehicles and stations. For safety reasons, the metro network is under video surveillance. In the unlikely event of a fire, the fire extinguishers on every train will come in handy. The metro offers assistance to people who use bicycles as a means of transport. They can be taken on board under certain conditions.
