NXT Great American Bash 2024 promised two weeks of great action starting on July 30.

Roxanne Perez put her NXT Women's Championship on the line against Thea Hail. Could the Chase U firecracker pull off the ultimate upset?

Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn returned to NXT to defend the Women's Tag Team Championships against Meta-Four's Lash Legend and Jakara Jackson.

Tony D'Angelo put his Heritage Cup on the line against an Olympian Tavion Heights. What would No Quarter Catch Crew do to regain the cup?

Joe Hendry promised his very first WWE live concert, likely to feature Gallus. "All Ego" Ethan Page and Oro Mensah would sign the contract for their NXT Championship clash on Week Two of GAB.

Fallon Henley, Jacy Jayne and Jazmyn Nyx hoped to embarrass the women they called "rookies", Lola Vice, Sol Ruca and Karmen Petrovic, in tag team action.

WWE NXT presented a loaded card that was absolute must-see television for the two weeks NXT would air on Syfy.

Women's Tag Team Championships: Unholy Union (c) vs. Meta-Four

1 of 8

Lash Legend's power was on full display in this match, but Isla Dawn and Alba Fyre were just too smart to lose. They isolated Jakara Jackson for the Evil Touch to seal the victory.

    WWE @WWE

    .<a href="https://twitter.com/lashlegendwwe?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@lashlegendwwe</a> can't be stopped! 😱<a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/NXTGAB?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#NXTGAB</a> <a href="https://t.co/yGgpodBeiR">pic.twitter.com/yGgpodBeiR</a>

Even with an unfortunate commercial break when the match was growing strong, this was one of the best women's tag team matches this year (an unfortunately low bar). Serious credit on that goes to the champions.

It is a shame that WWE does not seem interested in booking The Unholy Union often because Fyre and Dawn are a genuinely great tag team.

This was showcased in their consistent double-team offense as well as great team psychology throughout, selling the challengers as the rising babyfaces.

Legend and Jackson looked solid overall. Legend especially showed out while Jackson got a little sloppy late, likely due to a lack of experience.

    Result

Dawn and Fyre def. Legend and Jackson by pinfall to retain the Women's Tag Team Championships.

    Grade

    B

    Notable Moments

    • The show started with Hank and Tank infiltrating the WWE Performance Center to prepare for hosting Great American Bash.
    • The Unholy Union got a "Welcome back!" chant for their entrance.
    • Fyre and Dawn started the fight fast and took out Legend outside, allowing the champions to isolated Jackson back in the ring.
    • Legend blocked a poisonrana, and Meta-Four hit a wheelbarrow cutter for the near-fall.
    • After the match, Ethan Page taunted Oro Mensah, but "On Site" caught him with a roll-up. Legend and Jackson counted three, much to Page's frustration.
    • Later, Ava facilitated the contract signing for next week's NXT Championship match.

Heritage Cup: Tony D'Angelo (c) (w/ The Family) vs. Tavion Heights (w/ NQCC)

2 of 8

After a competitive first two falls, Tony D'Angelo got the first fall in round three with Forget About It. Wren Sinclair motivated Tavion Heights to respond with a belly-to-belly suplex for his first fall in round four.

    WWE @WWE

    😱 😱 😱<a href="https://twitter.com/TonyDangeloWWE?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@TonyDangeloWWE</a> might have picked up the first fall, but <a href="https://twitter.com/WrenSinclairWWE?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@WrenSinclairWWE</a> just gave <a href="https://twitter.com/TavionHeights?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@TavionHeights</a> the pump up speech of a lifetime!<br> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/NXTGAB?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#NXTGAB</a> <a href="https://t.co/efmPJMt93w">pic.twitter.com/efmPJMt93w</a>

Charlie Dempsey, Myles Borne and Sinclair argued outside afterward, leaving Heights alone for round five where The Don planted him with a high spinebuster to win.

This was a showcase match for Heights, who looked better than he ever has. D'Angelo let him shine through the first two rounds before the dramatics began. This could have used a little more time, but it was good for the time it got.

When NXT 2.0 first arrived, four men were declared as the leaders of the brand. D'Angelo is the last man standing on the gold brand, and it shows in his experience edge over most of his peers.

NXT is in a different era, and it is time for D'Angelo to get his main-roster call-up opportunity. Give him at least the Bron Breakker/Carmelo Hayes treatment, working the occasional match on Raw or SmackDown.

    Result

D'Angelo def. Heights 2-1 to retain the Heritage Cup.

    Grade

    B

    Notable Moments

    • Hank and Tank interviewed Heights and D'Angelo in separate locker rooms, both promising victory before their match.
    • D'Angelo and Heights ended the first round holding leg submissions. The corner men had to break them up.
    • In a pre-taped promo, Pete Dunne challenged Trick Williams next week after calling out his aggravating booking over the last couple years. Trick accepted.

Cedric Alexander vs. Brooks Jensen

3 of 8

Shawn Spears arrived late to watch this match closely. Brooks Jensen showed his brutality, sending Cedric Alexander reeling. However, after Jensen landed leg first hard on the announce table, Alexander caught him with the Lumbar Check to win.

    WWE @WWE

    Gotta keep your eyes on the prize...<a href="https://twitter.com/CedricAlexander?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@CedricAlexander</a> picks up a HUGE win! <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/NXTGAB?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#NXTGAB</a> <a href="https://t.co/w9uJH4NsQ0">pic.twitter.com/w9uJH4NsQ0</a>

There was not a result for this match that could help everyone. Alexander needed a win after a big loss last week. Jensen needed a win to keep his momentum going.

Alexander won out, which was likely the right move. The veteran cruiserweight needs some credibility. This win sets up a likely battle with The Chairman sooner than later, continuing to establish Alexander on this roster.

The action was fine but forgettable. Jensen looked solid and took advantage of working with a great veteran.

    Result

    Alexander def. Jensen by pinfall.

    Grade

    C+

    Notable Moments

    • Spears interrupted Alexander mentoring Performance Center talent. An argument between them caused Jensen to challenge Alexander.
    • Jensen nearly took the win after a throat shot that sent Alexander off the top rope following by a diving leg drop.

Joe Hendry's Live Concert is Interrupted by Gallus

4 of 8

Joe Hendry sang about how much he makes NXT better while teasing Booker T and Shawn Michaels. Finally, he claimed Gallus got "deported for having awful facial hair".

    WWE @WWE

    Ladies and Gentlemen, Joe Hendry! 🎤🎵<a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/NXTGAB?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#NXTGAB</a> <a href="https://t.co/Yn3ESZCPBt">pic.twitter.com/Yn3ESZCPBt</a>

When he prepared to sing his theme, Joe Coffey, Mark Coffey and Wolfgang interrupted. Gallus battered Hendry and hit him with his guitar.

As far as Hendry concerts go, this was not his best song, but it was a fun start to the full experience of The Scotsman. The crowd was all in on supporting Hendry through it all.

Gallus getting the first crack at Hendry was a smart way to keep them relevant after some tough losses. The group has done the most working with the incoming TNA talent of anyone.

The stage is set for what may be the most anticipated match of Joe's NXT career.

    Grade

    B+

    Notable Moments

    • Hendry continued to create believers backstage ahead of his concert.
    • The crowd was loudest of the night when booing Gallus interrupting the concert.
    • On his way out of the building, Hendry called out Joe for a one-on-one match next week.
    • Je'Von Evans talked about taking inspiration from Jeff Hardy and Rob Van Dam with his high-flying style.
    • The Rascalz brought the Treehouse to NXT for the first time, challenging Nathan Frazer and Axiom.
    • Later, Axiom agreed to the title match on behalf of The Supersonic Duo. Frazer was uncertain that Axiom was focused.

Jaida Parker vs. Kendal Grey (w/ Carlee Bright)

5 of 8

Kendal Grey fought hard but went down to Jaida Parker after a Teardrop in the corner and Hipnotic.

This was a basic squash to sell Parker's credibility. It may not have been necessary, but Grey got to get some experience on the main show at least rather than just LVL UP.

Parker seems to be in position for a title opportunity sooner than later. With time rapidly running low for Roxanne Perez's title reign, Parker could be a nice final title defense before either Giulia or Stephanie Vaquer take the gold.

While Parker is certainly not ready to be champion, she is ready for bigger spotlight matches to get that experience. While this may be too often said, she still needs a better finisher.

    Result

    Parker def. Grey by pinfall.

    Grade

    C-

    Notable Moments

    • Parker mocked Perez on her way to the ring, saying The Prodigy might lose tonight.
    • Wren Sinclair and Myles Borne confronted Carlee Bright at ringside. Grey used the opportunity to take out Borne again outside.
    • Tatum Paxley confronted Kelani Jordan to set up a Women's North American Championship match next week. Wendy Choo smiled at Jordan creepily.

Lola Vice, Sol Ruca and Karmen Petrovic vs. Fallon Henley, Jacy Jayne and Jazmyn Nyx

6 of 8

While Lola Vice, Sol Ruca and Karmen Petrovic worked well together, Fallon Henley, Jacy Jayne and Jazmyn Nyx just looked more cohesive. A pele kick into a rolling forearm strike into a lifting cutter on Petrovic sealed it for the heels.

This was a showcase of the present and future of NXT's women's division. Everyone got time to shine, and the right team won after taking some tough losses. In many ways, this over-delivered.

The cohesion of the teams was impressive. Ruca remains an inconsistent highlight reel performer that hits more than she misses. Vice has found her footing fully as a top woman. Petrovic showed out through hard work.

Henley and Jayne showed all their tag team experience by guiding this contest through some great sequences. Nyx though may have been the biggest surprise, showing out with an obvious stumble in wild action.

The heels finally picked up a victory together, and this should be the beginning of something more. The chemistry of these three in the ring should elevate them all with good booking.

    Result

Henley, Jayne and Nyx def. Vice, Ruca and Petrovic by pinfall.

    Grade

    A-

    Notable Moments

    • NXT showed the social media back-and-forth between these teams that set up this six-woman tag.
    Fallon Henley @FallonHenleyWWE

This place is a joke, it should've been us. <a href="https://t.co/s2Wx8wcD8r">pic.twitter.com/s2Wx8wcD8r</a>

    • Ruca save Petrovic from a Jayne and Henley double suplex then hit side-by-side dropkicks with her.
    • The trio of faces hit a trio of corner hip attacks on the heels to nearly set up the win.

NXT Women's Championship: Roxanne Perez (c) vs. Thea Hail (w/ Chase U)

7 of 8

Roxanne Perez focused on the the left arm throughout this match, softening up Thea Hail for her crossface that she locked in multiple times. Still, Hail refused to quit, forcing Perez to hit Pop Rox to retain.

    WWE @WWE

    THIS IS AWESOME 👏👏👏<a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/NXTGAB?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#NXTGAB</a> <a href="https://t.co/zkkoludpbR">pic.twitter.com/zkkoludpbR</a>

Nothing on this card was anywhere near this main event. Perez and Hail battled with pure ferocity. The Prodigy brought out the absolute best from Hail, who has never looked better.

The crowd was all in on this action, and Hail rode that excitement to multiple near-falls. Even if the action never quite sold the upset, the Chase U spitfire leveled up in this match.

NXT must give Hail gold sooner than later as she is ready and the NXT fans are more than ready to see it.

Perez will move onto her next challenge, likely awaiting a soon-to-debut Giulia, who is officially finishing up her dates in Japan on August 19.

    Result

Perez def. Hail by pinfall to retain the NXT Women's Championship.

    Grade

    A+

    Notable Moments

    • In the locker room, Ridge Holland told Hail that she needed to do "anything" to win.
    • Throughout the night, NXT placed each championship on the line on a pedestal to be highlighted throughout the match. It was a great presentation element.
    • Perez called Hail "just a little girl". This set off Chase U's spitfire, who ran over The Prodigy. Perez ducked a springboard senton then locked in the crossface, forcing Hail to roll outside to safety.
    • Hail nearly got the win off a diving crossbody into a Michinoku driver.
    • A furious back-and-forth battle of submission between the crossface and Kimura ended with a Hail springboard senton for a near-fall.

Overall Show

8 of 8

NXT has struggled at times to elevate its TV specials to the same level as premium live events. Week One of Great American Bash did not struggle.

This was a strong night, elevated by the work of the central talent. Every featured match delivered solid action and good booking.

Roxanne Perez vs. Thea Hail was at another level, good enough to have main evented a PLE. It was the ultimate reminder of how talented Hail is and the serious potential she has fostered.

The surprise of the night was Fallon Henley, Jacy Jayne and Jazmyn Nyx vs. Lola Vice, Sol Ruca and Karmen Petrovic, once again showcasing the depth of talent in NXT's women's division.

While not everything landed, this home stretch was special. Joe Hendry got his first concert. Meta-Four got a solid spotlight in and out of the ring. Tony D'Angelo showed why he is ready to graduate from NXT.

It was a successful show that will be tough for Week Two to follow.
